Alan received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1981. He is a registered professional engineer. Alan has worked for several consulting firms and the Federal Government in design, construction and management of various civil projects.

Established on January 23, 1827, Shelby County is named after Isaac Shelby, a soldier of the Revolution and Indian wars, Governor of Kentucky (1792-1796) and again (1812-1816). He commanded the Kentucky troops in the battle of the Thames in the War of 1812.
